Poster #7 - Addressing Mental Health in Prisons: Advocating for Support and Diversion Programs to Reduce Overpopulation

Thu, Nov 13, 7:30 to 8:30pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

Mental health issues are prevalent among jail populations, and the challenging conditions, strict regulations, and social isolation experienced by inmates are thought to adversely influence their psychological well-being. Research has shown a significant proportion of inmates suffering from psychiatric disorders during their time in jail. It is posited that the high rates of mental health needs contribute to the insufficient mental health support available within these facilities. A comprehensive review of existing literature is crucial to assess the jail environment and its implications for the mental health of inmates. The objective of this study is to explore how the jail environment, along with its associated policies and procedures, affects individuals who are incarcerated. This investigation ordains the complexities that arise from the detrimental effects of the jail setting on psychological health. While some studies propose that stringent jail conditions can create safe and secure environments that foster positive behavior among inmates, there remains a pressing need for further investigation, as numerous mental health issues often go unrecognized within the jail system. Effective collaboration between jail administrators and mental health professionals will lead to practical and innovative measures that create purposeful enhancements to jail conditions and support inmate mental well-being.
