Catalysts for Change: Why Prison Officers Matter More Than Ever

Fri, Nov 14, 8:00 to 9:20am, Mint - M4

Abstract

What if the future of justice reform lies not in policy, but in people? Unlocked Graduates, a charity inspiring ambitious graduates to be excellent prison officers across England and Wales, is redefining what it means to be a prison officer—bringing new ways of thinking, outstanding leadership potential, and a deep commitment to social change into the heart of the prison system. This talk will celebrate the impact of prison officers who are challenging cultures, influencing policy from the inside out and working tirelessly to prepare those in their care to lead successful lives post-release.

Prison officers are some of the most underappreciated professionals in society— often seen solely as enforcers rather than the everyday leaders they truly are. Despite their critical role in shaping outcomes for people in custody, their voices are rarely heard, and their impact seldom celebrated. There is a pressing need for more research into how prison officers experience their work and influence safety, wellbeing, rehabilitation and reoffending. This talk not only celebrates the impact of prison officers but also highlights opportunities for collaboration, with a call to the academic community to help elevate the role of prison officers as catalysts for hope and systemic change.
