Exploring “carceral creep” and Normalization in Everyday Life

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Woodley Park - M3

Abstract

This roundtable features discussants sharing their research interests in the reach, or “creep,” of carceral themes, settings, and logics into various aspects of day-to-day life. Examples include prison-themed entertainment, fundraising events, and children’s clothing or toys. The incorporation of carceral logic and experiences into non-carceral elements of daily life can further normalize State violence as “ordinary” and perpetuate carceral stereotypes. The roundtable includes a discussion of current and planned research on carceral creep and how to identify and challenge the presence of carcerality in daily life. Panelists encourage attendees to share their encounters with carceral creep or research centered on the reach and normalization of carcerality in everyday life.
