Our study aims to develop a typology of violent partners based on their personality characteristics, as classified under DSM-5’s Axis II, and then to determine whether our classification aligns with or diverges from existing typologies. We compare the profiles of violent partners using various psychometric instruments that assess psychopathy, impulsivity, criminal thinking styles, and the specific forms of violence they perpetrate within the intimate relationship. A trajectory analysis will be conducted to examine whether violent partners follow distinct patterns of violence.
We analyzed data from 121 incarcerated partners in Quebec, including 100 perpetrators of physical violence and 21 perpetrators of both physical and sexual violence. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, psychometric assessments, and review of official records. A cluster analysis will be used to categorize partners according to personality traits, followed by univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) comparisons in SPSS. In addition, a trajectory analysis in Mplus will explore distinct violence trajectories and their influencing factors.
Our objective is to identify unique patterns associated with different profiles of violent partners, thereby enhancing our understanding of the variability in violent behavior. This research seeks to inform targeted intervention strategies aimed at preventing such violence.
