The new Kurdish peace initiative in Turkey presents an exceptional strategic opportunity, with the potential to reshape both domestic and regional political dynamics. Backed by an unexpected actor—the ultra-nationalist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP)—the initiative aims to address longstanding Kurdish issues. Momentum has grown following the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s announcement of its dissolution, which may pave the way for disarmament and a peaceful resolution, should the process succeed. However, several outstanding issues could create obstacles and potentially delay or derail progress. Key concerns include a lack of transparency regarding the legal framework, an overreliance on individual actors rather than inclusive engagement with broader stakeholders, and narrowly defined objectives driven by individual-centered, quid pro quo political calculations—such as the DEM MPs' support for a constitutional amendment allowing President Erdoğan to run for office again—instead of the broader democratization that is urgently needed. To ensure success, the peace initiative must be transparent, people-centered, and aimed at comprehensive reforms that empower democratic norms, revitalize the rule of law, and strengthen judicial independence. This talk will examine the potential risks and offer policy recommendations to help ensure the success of the new peace process.
