Social support access among justice system involved teen parents

Thu, Nov 13, 9:30 to 10:50am, Maple - Second Floor

Abstract

Adolescence and emerging adulthood are marked by significant life changes. One of the most profound changes to a young person’s life is parenthood. To date, little is known about how justice involved young people navigate the transition to parenthood after justice contact. Specifically, there are still many open empirical questions regarding access to social support, efficacy of various types of support, and gender differences in access to social support. This discussion will emphasize the need to further investigate the role justice system involvement plays in access to support, as well as the role of social support in successful parenting outcomes among young people with justice system involvement.
