Poster #212 - The Impact of Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders on Prison Misconduct

Thu, Nov 13, 7:30 to 8:30pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

Using data collected as part of the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI), this project explores the role of mental health and substance abuse disorders on prison misconduct. The SPI uses interview data collected from individuals incarcerated in state and federal prisons across the US. The dependent variable was the number of write-ups since admission to prison and independent variables of interest include the presence of a mental health diagnosis and/or substance use disorder. The role of these co-occurring disorders in predicting misconduct will be discussed and policy implications will be offered.
