Purely quantitative approaches to evaluating program effectiveness often fail to explain how participant experiences impact program outcomes. Yet, there is no automatic feedback mechanism for communities served by direct-practice organizations to influence the provider’s policies and practices. Researchers and practitioners from the Center for Justice Innovation, a non-profit organization and pretrial services agency, developed an exit survey to systematically gather participant feedback to inform pretrial programming. This study details the design process of an exit survey for Supervised Release (SR) participants in two New York City counties, includes preliminary findings from the survey, and demonstrates how resulting insights can drive major operational decisions on the ground.
