The goal of translational science is to evaluate, facilitate, and expedite the efficient transfer of knowledge from research to practice. Beyond establishing and maintaining partnerships with criminal justice and legal practitioners, it is important that we find ways to take stock of the knowledge that has successfully made the transition. Knowledge graphs and NLP can be used to condense and summarize knowledge. However, once a body of text has been classified into topics or summarized as a knowledge graph, the challenge lies in the comparison of different domains (e.g., academia and law). In this talk, I briefly discuss the technology, methodologies, and ideas for quantifying intersections and overlaps between the ontologies of practitioners and academics using text data from life-course criminology and the appellate courts as an illustrative example.
