Using the Women in Orange dataset, the paper discusses the disjuncture between what women recall expecting prison to feel like and function compared to their reflections after some time held within their carceral facility. Themes include comparisons to men’s prisons, the role of media and personal relationships in developing expectations about prison, and notes about the unique functioning in one women’s facility.
