Gender expression in prison

Abstract

While prisons typically same-sex spaces characterized by uniformity, much has been written about personal identity maintenance in carceral facilities. This paper uses the Women in Orange dataset to explore strategies for expressing (or decidedly not expressing) gender in the regimented space of one women’s prisons.
