Unveiling Barriers: The Challenges of Convict Criminology in Brazil

Abstract

Little is known about the Convict Criminology movement within the Brazilian context. In order to stimulate the debate to a better understanding of this process, this lightning talk aims to brief the main challenges involved in formulating, implementing, and expanding educational initiatives for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals in Brazil. To exemplify, this population has limited access to education, especially at advanced levels and, furthermore, in most Brazilian universities, criminology is neither recognized as an autonomous discipline nor offered as an elective. Drawing on the pioneering experiences, as the one at the State University of Maranhão —particularly the cultural and university extension project Another Vision (2023)— concrete strategies for advancing convict criminology in Brazil will be propose.
