Prior research suggests Latina/o/x/e, and other underrepresented minority, faculty may face additional challenges in their pursuit of tenure and promotion at U.S. universities. As the representation of Latina/o/e/x faculty increases, it is important to reflect and consider these existing challenges. This is important as Hispanic Serving Institution (HSIs) federal appropriations continue to grow and so does the number of HSIs and emerging HSIs. However, Latina/o/e/x faculty, in particular ones early in their career, may face unique challenges in how to balance their workload and achieve key milestones as they work towards tenure and promotion. These includes heightened service expectations, invisible labor based on identity, and the extraordinary push to have an “impact” in their research and in the classroom. The authors reflect on their experiences in this context and emphasize certain strategies used to promote success in HSIs, which can be adapted for others across the field.
