Many Universities and Colleges celebrate the “Hispanic Serving Institution” (HSI) label as a distinction that symbolizes their commitment to serving underrepresented communities. The U.S. Department of Education outlines the eligibility requirements and guidance for institutions seeking HSI status. There are gaps in our understanding, however, about the extent to which serving at an HSI impacts the structural hierarchy and power dynamics among upper administration and faculty who identify as “Latino/a/x.” Drawing from theoretical frameworks centering systemic inequality, intersectionality, and bureaucracies, the authors reflect on the benefits and challenges of serving at an HSI and discuss potential strategies for navigating power dynamics within this structure.
