Poster #220 - The Paradox of Prohibition: Stress, Stigma, and the Rise of Drug Use in South Korea

Abstract

Despite South Korea's strict drug laws, the prevalence of drug use, particularly narcotics, has been on the rise in recent years. Several key factors contribute to this increase, including the country's highly stressful and competitive societal environment, growing income inequality, and lax regulations surrounding prescription drugs. These conditions have created an atmosphere where individuals are more susceptible to substance abuse, often using drugs as a coping mechanism for mental health challenges. The government's focus on prosecution rather than rehabilitation has further compounded the issue, with slow and limited responses to the evolving drug crisis. Additionally, the strong societal stigma surrounding drug use prevents many individuals from seeking help, further hindering progress in addressing addiction. There is an urgent need for a shift in policy, prioritizing rehabilitation and prevention over punitive measures, to effectively combat the rising drug epidemic and provide a pathway for recovery.
