The Impact of Toxic Masculinity on Modern Sex Work and Pornography

Fri, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Mint - M4

Abstract

Modern sex work can be a source of strength and independence for women as it gives them the power to create content on their terms (Allen, 2023). However, sex work operates within a patriarchal system where misogynistic perspectives can overshadow the progress that women are trying to achieve. Toxic masculinity (i.e., the socially destructive and hegemonic aspect of masculinity that seeks to maintain male dominance over women), specifically on the
internet, can emphasize the misogynistic attitudes and power imbalances that are still ever-present in sex work (Jewkes, 2015). Toxic masculinity can enforce negative attitudes about modern sex workers and feminist ideas that aid in the victimization of modern sex workers (Dellner, 2022). Additionally, the rise of social media acts as a third space and echo chamber for misogynistic discourse. Incels, or “involuntary celibates,” are an example of a group that can spread toxic masculinity ideals and misogyny using pornographic material on the Internet (Beverly, 2022). These factors combine to create a dangerous setting where all women can be vulnerable to victimization beyond online platforms. This presentation will explore the impact toxic masculinity has on the perception of modern sex workers, pornography, and the victimization of women as an effect.
