This talk will raise questions about the collateral consequences of probation and parole for close family and friends of people under community supervision, as well as the larger community. Referencing both the concept of secondary prisonization, as well as the negative consequences of community policing, this presentation asks if the meaning of “community supervision” extends from a person serving their sentence on the street to increased surveillance of those around them. Additionally, how do partnerships between community supervision agencies and police departments negatively impact people who are otherwise not involved in the criminal legal system? The initial research design for an upcoming study will be presented, with the invitation for feedback.
