Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This session explores perceptions of police from four different demographics: a nationally representative sample, a national sample of college students, a national sample of emerging adults, and a national sample of LGBTQI+ individuals. The objective is to better understand whether current perceptions of police differ based on intersectional identities, prior experiences with police, experiences of victimization, media, or other reasons. Two presentations include quantitative analysis of victimization experiences, reporting to police, and police perception. Two presentations include mixed methodology of police perspectives based on intersectional identities. Results indicate that personal experiences with the police only partially relate to perceptions of police, that reporting of victimization experiences differs based on identities, and that media may play a strong role in why individuals perceive the police in the way that they do.
