Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Understanding trends in youth offending and juvenile justice system involvement is vital for informing policy and practice. This panel explores trends in youth violence and the juvenile justice system’s response using three federally collected data sources: the Uniform Crime Reporting System, the National Juvenile Court Data Archive, and the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement. Specifically, this panel will present trends in youth arrests, juvenile court case processing, and youth placement in juvenile residential facilities for violent offenses. The presentations will examine current trends within historical context, particularly comparing youth violence today with the mid-1990s peak.
