Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will lead a discussion on BJS’s local and tribal jail-related data collections, including upcoming initiatives and reports. This workshop provides national-level findings on jail population trends and information about the recently completed Survey of Inmates of Local Jails (SILJ). SILJ is the only national source of detailed information on the characteristics of jail inmates, including drug and alcohol use and indicators of mental health problems reported by jail inmates. Additional emerging issues, including opioid use disorder screening and treatment in jails, will be explored. The session also will provide an opportunity for audience members to engage in a dialogue regarding the essential data required to comprehensively understand jail populations.
