Bystanders as a Resource: Understanding Intervention Across the Online and Offline Domain - CANCELLED

Fri, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Gallaudet - M1

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Bystanders play a pivotal role in shaping the outcomes of harmful situations, whether in online spaces or public conflicts on the street. Their decisions can significantly impact the safety and well-being of those involved. Yet, bystanders often face barriers to intervention, including uncertainty about the best course of action, fear of retribution, and lack of awareness or perceived responsibility. Understanding the psychological, social, and situational factors that motivate or hinder bystanders’ willingness and ability to intervene is essential in developing effective strategies for prevention and creating safer environments across both the online and offline domain. This panel will focus on exploring the dynamics of bystander behavior across different contexts, including digital platforms and public spaces. By investigating the factors that influence bystanders’ actions, the panel aims to offer a clearer understanding of the challenges they encounter and identify strategies which can help reinforce more proactive and effective intervention. Through these different perspectives, we aim to uncover strategies to empower bystanders—whether friends, strangers, or parents—to act and mitigate harm.
