Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Technology-facilitated victimization, including cyberstalking, sextortion, and image-based sexual abuse, presents growing challenges in the digital age. This panel examines the risks and long-term harms associated with these forms of online exploitation, using diverse methodological approaches to explore victimization experiences, psychological impacts, and policy implications. The first two studies analyze dating app-facilitated victimization, identifying how usage patterns and disclosure behaviors heighten the risk of harassment and cyberstalking. A third study expands on cyberstalking victimization by applying routine activity theory to examine how privacy behaviors, online activities, and exposure to motivated offenders influence vulnerability. A systematic review then synthesizes research on the psychosocial impacts of image-based sexual abuse, drawing parallels to offline sexual violence. The final study focus on sextortion victimization among men, assessing both immediate coping mechanisms and long-term emotional consequences. Together, these studies provide additional insight into victimization risks and consequences.
