Innovations in Human Trafficking Research—Part 3: Community Partnerships addressing CSE and Substance Use

Fri, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Chinatown - M3

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

This panel highlights innovative research being done by the Human Exploitation Advocacy Team (HEAT) in Boston to address commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and substance use. Like most major cities in the US, Boston is impacted by the opioid and housing crises, resulting in a population of unhoused and substance-addicted people trying to navigate complex systems of care and justice. Unhoused and substance addicted women face unique challenges and threats to accessing safety and care under these conditions, including CSE and sexual violence. The Boston HEAT is a clinician-peer team whose radical approach to working with women living at the intersection of substance use and CSE seeks to redefine “care” by meeting women where they are and their basic human needs. This panel will provide background on the theoretical and practical foundations for Boston HEAT, describe the daily work of HEAT through sustained interdisciplinary relationships, discuss the role of academic and provider ideological debates in facilitating or hindering access to care and safety, and present preliminary findings from a community-based participatory research designed evaluation. This panel explores the intersectional nature of CSE and substance use as well as how recognizing the expertise of people with lived experiences informs service providers and research.
