Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This panel brings together several authors whose qualitative work broadens and deepens our understanding of “carcerality”—a concept often associated with carceral facilities such as jails and prisons. The presenters in this panel demonstrate how many institutions beyond the penal system advance carceral objectives. Presentations explore the impact of pretrial surveillance on health, the role of the carceral state in forging system-involved men’s reliance on women, and the carceral dimensions of safety.
