Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Victimization Statistics Unit (VSU) manages data collections focused on nonfatal criminal victimization and victim service provision in the United States. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the nation's primary source of information on criminal victimization and each year data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of about 240,000 persons in about 150,000 households. The National Census of Victim Service Providers (NCVSP) and National Survey of Victim Service Providers (NSVSP) both collect data on victim service provision in the United States from the perspective of organizations who serve victims. This conference panel will provide a variety of updates for the VSU data collections, including NCVS instrument redesign updates, state-level crime estimates, measuring repeat victimization, and the feasibility of measuring cybercrime on NCVS supplements. Recent updates from the NCVSP and NSVSP will also be discussed.
