Community Driven Data Sharing & Engagement: The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Transparency Analytics (DATA) CoLab

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marquis Salon 15 - M2

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Objective: The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Transparency Analytics (DATA) CoLab was created so that community-based organizations could have access to and leverage data to inform programming. Through data sharing and engagement, the CoLab Initiative aims to apply an interdisciplinary approach to community-led crime prevention. The approach recognizes that crime, particularly violent crime, is a public health and racial justice issue, and that prosecutorial offices generally respond to crime. The DATA CoLab set out to develop and implement a sustainable model with measurable impact and reach that can be implemented in other prosecutors’ offices around the county.

Methods: The DATA CoLab received grant funding to establish a data-sharing model that was built using principles of community-based participatory research. The DATA CoLab identified neighborhoods that could benefit from data-sharing through intentional community-based participatory collaboration.

Conclusions/Implications: The DATA CoLab model has been successfully implemented with eight community-based partner organizations across four Philadelphia communities. Our partners receive dedicated support from DAO personnel, including custom data work product to inform and quantify programming. Data support is one way to empower community voices and organizations at the forefront of enacting change informed by both data and lived experience. We hope this model can be implemented elsewhere.
