Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
While it has been documented that vulnerability to such things as teen dating violence, alcohol misuse, and suicide vary by racial/ethnic/gender/sexuality subgroups, we still know very little about whether the factors that both protect or increase the likelihood of these phenomenon are the same or different across these subgroups. The extant literature still primarily estimates full-sample models and controls for various subgroups of the population (e.g. gender identity, sexuality, race/ethnicity). However, these models only tell us which group, if any, is more or less likely to experience a particular outcome. To determine the differential factors that may predict these phenomena, subgroup-specific models predicting an outcome should be examined. Using the national 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), papers in this panel explore the etiology of various outcomes for under-served subgroups of the population. In this way, policies aimed at preventing such outcomes can be more validly informed.
