Session Submission Summary

Mixed-Method Approaches to Evaluating Policing Partnerships, Policies, and Training

Fri, Nov 14, 12:30 to 1:50pm, 2, Magnolia - Second Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Evaluating policing strategies presents significant challenges due to the complex and multifaceted nature of law enforcement activities. The dynamic interplay of social, political, and organizational factors complicates the assessment of these strategies' effectiveness and impact. Recent research by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) delves into various policing policies and practices, offering critical insights. This panel will explore four key projects. First, we will discuss the results of a Third Party Policing strategy—a partnership between law enforcement and hotels—to reduce drug activity in a Maryland county. Second, PERF is conducting a nationwide survey of agencies to understand better the role of police in implementing extreme risk prevention orders (ERPOs), also known as red flag laws, present in 21 states and DC. Third, we will present findings on law enforcement agencies' preparedness for and response to protest events, with recommendations derived from a comprehensive survey and in-depth case studies to ensure safe and successful First Amendment activities. Fourth, we will discuss using body-worn camera video footage to identify and address training needs within agencies, enhancing officer training programs. A discussant will provide an overview of the implications of these and other PERF research projects.
