Session Submission Summary

Police Training and Appearance Policies

Fri, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marquis Salon 14 - M2

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Low public confidence in police may be attributable to police image, which stems from appearance policies and reports of unnecessary police escalation in encounters with citizens. Many police agencies are relaxing their appearance policies, given the current recruiting crisis in policing; additionally, police training tends to focus on learning the penal code and tactical training, with little attention to deescalation tactics. However, this may have unintended detrimental effects in other areas. In particular, police appearance affects public attitudes toward police and willingness to engage with police as crime victims, witnesses to crime, reporters of crime and more. Thus, the purpose of this panel is to explore police appearance policies and police training curricula, with a focus on time spent on deescalation training.
