Session Submission Type: Workshop
Peer review is an essential yet often overlooked and undervalued part of the publication process. Thoughtful, constructive feedback strengthens scholarship and advances knowledge in meaningful ways. However, many scholars receive little to no formal training on how to conduct effective reviews. Instead, we struggle with unclear or contradictory feedback from “Reviewer 2” and may hesitate to accept review invitations ourselves. This interactive workshop, hosted by the editorial teams of Race and Justice, Feminist Criminology, and Critical Criminology, will provide practical guidance on how to be a strong and effective reviewer. In this 3-hour hands-on session, participants will gain insights into the peer-review process, learn key strategies for providing constructive feedback, and develop confidence in their role as reviewers. Designed especially for graduate students and early-career scholars, this session will equip attendees with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the scholarly community. Participants will also have the opportunity to join the preferred reviewer lists for the host journals. We encourage all scholars to attend and take an active role in shaping rigorous and impactful research.
