Roundtable: GenAI in the Criminology Classroom - Perspectives from Across the Country

Fri, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Farragut North - M3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions

Abstract/Description

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is permeating colleges and universities at a rapid pace (Jensen et al., 2024). Additionally, many students have admitted to using AI for at least some part of their written work, regardless of the course policies in place. (Welding, 2023). Overall, there is limited but developing research on student and professor perspectives on its use in higher education. However, there is no known research that specifically examines criminology and criminal justice (CCJ) students’ and professors’ attitudes towards use of GenAI for its coursework. Using a panel of teacher-scholars from around the country, this roundtable will explore student attitudes of GenAI in their courses, as well as CCJ professors’ own policies and practices regarding the use of GenAI in their classrooms, departments, and universities. Overall, we expect to find a divide in perspectives when comparing students to faculty on the use of GenAI in CCJ-specific classes.
