Roundtable: Reimagining the Sequential Intercept Model - Addressing Mental Health Needs Through Justice and Social Work Collaboration.

Wed, Nov 12, 8:00 to 9:20am, Holly - Second Floor

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions

Abstract/Description

The Sequential Intercept Model’s (SIM) primary goals are to reduce the over-reliance on the criminal legal system (CLS) for individuals with severe mental illness (SMI), mitigate collateral consequences, and identify opportunities for more effective interventions. The SIM consists of six linear intercepts, starting at community services through probation and parole. While each intercept provides opportunities for individuals to receive services and potentially be diverted from the CLS, gaps remain in the communication between criminal legal actors, behavioral health professionals, community organizations, community members, and the incarcerated individuals, thereby inherently limiting diversion and treatment efforts. Reimagining how the SIM is conceptualized, the role(s) of all involved parties, and the collaborative structure within the communities are needed. This will require exploring how social workers, criminal justice professionals, community members, justice-impacted individuals, and policymakers can work together to decentralize the focus on criminal legal interventions for individuals with SMI where appropriate and incorporate holistic responses to both the individuals and communities navigating the persistent challenges connected to CLS involvement. The roundtable will discuss a reconceptualization of the SIM, identify strategies for all involved parties to collaborate through jurisdictional advisory boards, and incorporate theoretical and practical insights into the reimagination of the SIM
