Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions
According to renowned justice reformer of all time Cesare Beccaria, as epitomized in his groundbreaking classical book titled “On Crime and Punishment”, that punishment should neither be too light nor too harsh in response to the harm done by a crime. In the letter and spirit of that widely known and accepted view of justice, is former president of Philippine Rodrigo Duterte who is now under the custody of the ICC because of the way and manner by which he waged war on illegal drugs during his tenure as president of Philippine from 2016-2022, too harsh in waging his campaign on war on drugs? If so, how so? And if not, how not? Is his criminalization politically motivated? If so, how so, and if not, how not? This roundtable, therefore, intends to examine the case critically.
