Session Submission Summary

Roundtable: Bridging Research and Practice - Federal Strategies for Preventing Firearm-Related Crimes Through Technology and Coordination

Fri, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Eastern Market - M3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions

Abstract/Description

Efforts to prevent and respond to firearm-related crime remain a central focus of federal, state, and local agencies. As part of this work, US DOJ-supported research — such as studies of the Crime Gun Intelligence Centers (CGICs), Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), and NIJ’s broader violence portfolio — has produced actionable insights that can support law enforcement and inform strategic planning. This roundtable will examine how federally funded research can be translated into practical tools and strategies to enhance investigative capacity, support data-driven decision-making, and promote interagency coordination. Discussion topics will include the operational use of forensic and investigative technologies (e.g., NIBIN, eTrace), research on implementation and outcomes across jurisdictions, and aligning federal research investments with criminal justice practitioners’ needs. Participants will also discuss unanswered questions and the research necessary to guide future studies. Designed as an open dialogue among researchers, federal analysts, and practitioner stakeholders, the session will focus on strengthening the bridge between research and practice to support public safety nationwide.
