Roundtable: Innovation and Policing for the Future World - Training, Technology and Legitimacy

Thu, Nov 13, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Woodley Park - M3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions

Abstract/Description

Policing in the contemporary world faces numerous challenges, including unstable domestic and international environments, a lack of trust within communities, the impact of new technologies, and the need for enhanced training. These features are standard to both developed and developing countries and constitute contemporary challenges for policing. Respect for human rights and a better relationship with communities in a hyper-mediated society require new paradigms. This roundtable discusses these issues from a perspective that combines both academic and practitioners' logic. It will address these issues involving scholars from different continents. Consequently, police officers are no longer simply bureaucrats; they must be thinkers who can identify their environment, the potential risks associated with their actions, and their legitimacy. Hence, the focus is on identifying possible strategies to enhance the impact of policing.
