Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions
The roundtable examines the lasting impact of colonialism on the Caribbean and proposes pathways for creating a strong, independent, and nearly crime-free future. It begins by analyzing the historical legacies of European colonization, including the socio-economic structures and systemic inequalities established during this era. The discussion then shifts to the post-colonial challenges that continue to affect the region, such as economic dependency, social inequities, and political instability, all of which have contributed to high crime and violence. To move beyond these colonial legacies, the conversation will identify strategies for building a more resilient and self-sufficient Caribbean. The discussion will also highlight the role of community engagement, social programs, and regional cooperation in addressing the root causes of crime.
