Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions
In 2020, the Division on Corrections and Sentencing (DCS) revamped its mentoring program, DCS Mentoring for Success. Through this process, DCS created four unique mentoring tracks, two for academia (students and tenure-track assistant professors) and two for alt-ac (students and early career researchers). Our program integrates a selection and matching process, suggested schedule to guide mentorship activities, and provided tips/guidance for participants. The Mentoring for Success program involves dedicated committee members who work on program materials, hosting events throughout the year, and carefully matching mentorship pairs. In this roundtable, committee members will discuss their work and solicit feedback for improvement and participants from the program will highlight their experiences, lessons learned, and ideas for improving mentoring through DCS moving forward. This roundtable will conclude with a discussion of ideas for improving the mentoring program moving forward. Drawing on best practice on mentorship in academic settings, we will discuss strategies for developing strong relationships, building communication skills, and fostering career advancement. We will also discuss ways to promote networking and further involvement within the Division
