Roundtable: Ethical Issues with Artificial Intelligence and Teaching

Thu, Nov 13, 9:30 to 10:50am, Gallery Place - M3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Sessions

Abstract/Description

In November 2022, OpenAI debuted their large language model (LLM), ChatGPT, a powerful conversational tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to both process massive datasets and respond to user inquiries for myriad content generation. Since this release, waves of new generative artificial intelligence (“GenAI”) models from different companies have flooded the marketplace, prompting universities to integrate these tools into the workflows of their institution; however, these tools remain ethically and pedagogically controversial for a plethora of reasons, and guidelines for their use within the university setting are far from universal. This roundtable discusses some of the ethical issues confronting university-level educators and students regarding the wide adaptation of these Gen-AI tools. What impact might GenAI use have on the ability for students to engage in critical thought? If implemented, what are the possible ways that students and faculty might use AI, and what should be the ethical boundaries of its use? What is the appropriate response to breaches of those ethical boundaries?
