Vulgar or Rarefied? Tynianov's Sociology of Literature Then and Now

Thu, November 20, 3:00 to 4:45pm, Marriott San Antonio Rivercenter, Floor: 3rd Floor, Conference Room 11

Abstract

My presentation will address the sociological literary theories of the Russian Formalist critic Yurii Tynianov. Though different from what Stalinism would later denounce as "vulgar sociology," Tynianov's theories at times conflated aesthetic and social categories. After addressing this issue in Tynianov's work, I will move on to my own literary-sociological research into the Soviet 1920s and compare it with some approaches used by the French sociologist of culture Pierre Bourdieu.
