Abstract

Ilya Erenburg’s attitude towards Germany and the Germans is well known since World War II, when the soviet author and journalist stood up for the Soviet Union and agitated against the Fascist regime. But what do we learn about Erenburg’s attitude from his early novels The Extraordinary Adventures of Julio Jurenito and His Disciples (1922) and Trust D.E. (1923)? The paper examines images of Germany and Germans to illustrate how Erenburg operated with stereotypes to ridicule a nation with which he was closely connected in different ways all his life.
