Abstract

Drawing on archival material, this paper provides an analysis of discourses at a meeting of Soviet translators on the eve of Stalin’s death. At this moment of unexpected unpredictability, many matters were brought to a head and all positions were sharpened. Contextualizing the event, the paper throws new light on the cultural development of the post-WWII era.
