Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable examines current and recent trends in the development of the Russian Internet. During a period of unprecedented rapid changes in the political control over RuNet, we examine current processes of development in the Russian segment of the Internet from social, economic, and industrial perspectives. Participants discuss several ongoing research projects and address the combined implications of these findings and the respective forecasts for the future of RuNet. Talks examine the formation of new “digital neighborhoods” in connection with offline social and geographic developments, the development of online markets in Russia and scenarios for future economic growth, and the reactions of the ICT industry to rapid changes in the legislative environment. Each roundtable participant discusses their particular area of expertise on these social, economic, and legal developments, and the participants also address unifying questions, examining how these concurrent trends are interacting to shape the future development of the Russian online environment as a driver of social, economic, and political change in Russian society.
