Russian Policy in Spain and the Coming of the Peninsular War, 1805-1809

Abstract

This project explores Russian foreign policy in Spain and the accompanying relations with the Great Powers during the Napoleonic era. It argues that Russia actively promoted an alliance with Spain as a way for King Carlos IV to escape British and French pressure. The main focus of the paper is on Grigorii A. Stroganov, the Russian Ambassador in Madrid from 1805-1809, who witnessed the looming shadow of Napoleonic power on the Spanish crown and people. An evaluation of his activities as Russian ambassador generates new perspectives on the significance of Russia in the balance of power as well as Russian involvement in the Mediterranean during this era.
