Nationalism, Ottomanism, and Constitutional Crisis: The Case of the 1908 Samos Uprising

Sat, November 19, 1:45 to 3:30pm, Wardman DC Marriott, Floor: Lobby Level, Park Tower Room 8211

Abstract

This paper focuses on the May 1908 uprising on the island of Samos. The short-lived rebellion that broke out in 1908 is usually characterized as the project of Greek nationalists aiming to unify the island with the Kingdom of Greece. While nationalist agitation played an important role in the uprising, the actual course of events was characterized by a complex conversation between nationalists, those Samiotes who wanted to remain in the Empire, and the agents of the imperial government.
