In the post-Soviet period, Russian women have played only a minor role both in politics and business, but it is indisputable that they now occupy a much more prominent position in literature than they have in any previous periods of Russian culture. By the end of 2016 some women writers had won major literary prizes, while others had become bestselling popular authors. The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the most striking features of Russian women’s prose writing in the twenty-first century, concentrating particularly on elite literature, and to assess what impact Russian women writers have now exerted on Russian culture and society as a whole.
