Session Submission Type: Roundtable
George Mason University has launched a major new international multidisciplinary scholarly program, the Russian/Soviet Perspectives on Islam (RPI). The project seeks to facilitate scholarly and public understanding of cultural coexistence and conflict in multi-ethnic and multi-confessional societies through the digitization and exploration of a large document collection on the encounter and evolving relationship between the secular state and the Muslim regions, groups, individuals, and ideologies on the territory of the former Soviet Union and neighboring countries. The project involves digitization, transcription, translation and annotation of key primary source materials, as well as creation of a platform for individual and collective scholarly work, presentation of materials in various formats, teaching and research modules. We invite all interested parties to attend this launch meeting, and participate in the discussion about the development of the project in the future.
