Session Submission Type: Panel
Ethical criticism is a highly challenging issue, as companies are not only referred to as economic actors, but as responsible corporate citizens that have a stake in society. Additionally, internationally active firms have to consider that actions are not only evaluated locally, but globally. I.e. Swedish Telecom was involved in a corruption scandal in Azerbaijan and had to cope with severe ethical criticism and legal prosecution from its domestic market. The international company is subject to ethical criticism from two different perspectives:
(I) The international enterprise as an unethical actor
(II) The international enterprise as a moral authority
Therefore, this panel invites theoretical and empirical papers that deal with ethical criticism as a political risk factor for international companies in Eastern Europe. Papers can be comparative or case studies. Both dimensions, businesses as (i) perpetrators and violators of ethics or (ii) bystanders indirectly affected through societal expectations will be considered.
