Presidential Plenary '1917 and Its Implications'

Fri, November 10, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Marriott Downtown Chicago, Floor: 7th, Salon 1

Session Submission Type: Presidential Plenary Session

Brief Description

This panel aims to examine whether the 1917 Russian Revolution was as “revolutionary” as we think. It will examine the extent to which we see an immediate and radical break in literary forms, social structure, and political life in Russia and beyond. There is evidence of continuity, hybridity, and bricolage, and these invite us to reconsider the Revolution. More broadly, the panel will examine the broad implications of the Revolution across time and space. What are the implications of the Revolution for the broader study of revolution, and for our understanding of transgression, transformation, and what are the social, political, and ethical echoes of 1917 in 1991 or 2000?
