Abstract

The AD 1037 entry of the Primary Chronicle includes a famously controversial passage about the translation activity, or lack thereof, in Rus'. This paper re-examines the interpretations of the East Slavonic text, and discusses the role of modern understandings of translation in the reading this entry.
