Paper Politics: The Eclipse of Unlicensed Media Activism in the Course of 1989

Abstract

The paper addresses the samizdat print culture in Poland, the swift disintegration of the independent communication networks in 1989, as well as the post-1989 clash between the visions of culture and politics of unlicensed media activists and the ones championed by transitional politicians, in order to establish a link between the post-1989 transition and the current authoritarian backsliding.
